American Business Women's Association, Charlotte Charter Chapter
about ABWA.....

In the decade of the forties, working women were making significant new inroads in the business
world. Hilary A. Bufton, Jr., a Kansas City businessman saw the need for an organization to
support and empower them. In 1949, Bufton, founded ABWA. ABWA continues to serve as the
ultimate source of professional development opportunities, networking support and well-deserved
recognition for businesswomen. The organization maintains its national headquarters in Kansas
City.

ABWA has long been accepted as one of the leading business women's associations in the United
States and its far-reaching influence has touched the lives and careers of so many. It's incredible
to realize that it all began more than 50 years ago, when the term business woman was an oddity
and an association dedicated to advancing women's careers was simply unheard of.

Charlotte Charter Chapter

The chapter was the second organized in North Carolina. On May 26, 1956, Mrs. Bain along with
48 charter members signed the original charter to get the chapter started. Lola Abernathy
sponsored the first Hand of Friendship Tea on September 23, 1956 at her home with about 100
guests participating. The Charlotte Charter Chapter holds a monthly dinner meeting bringing
together women of many diverse backgrounds.

The chapter members have been very active in their support of local chapter activities, regional
and national conventions. The chapter currently has 50 active members and is always open to
accept others interested in enhancing their lives by becoming a part of this organization.

Over the years, Charlotte Charter Chapter sponsored numerous scholarships for women to further
their education. Donations have also been made to the Stephen Bufton Memorial Educational
Fund.

The women of Charlotte Charter Chapter are continually dedicating themselves to
the objective "to promote the professional, educational, cultural, and social
advancement of business women".
